Why do different people have different effects of wearing the same hearing aid?
2024-07-24In their daily work with hearing-impaired people, hearing aid fitters often encounter this situation: the same type of hearing aid has different effects on different people. Some people say they can socialize normally, while others still can't hear clearly. Some people have mild hearing loss and poor listening effects, while some people have severe hearing loss and good listening effects... Why does this happen?
We need to understand some simple hearing knowledge. The human ear can be divided into three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. If the sound is transmitted through the air, it will enter the inner ear from the outer ear and the middle ear, and then be received by the brain. This is called air conduction. Sound can also enter the inner ear directly into the skull by vibrating the skull, which is called bone conduction. Hearing care workers perform pure tone tests on a daily basis to test air conduction hearing and bone conduction hearing.
Based on the audiogram, we can classify hearing loss:
- 1. If only the outer ear and middle ear have problems, it is conductive hearing loss.
- 2. If only the inner ear and the auditory nerve have problems, it is sensorineural hearing loss.
- 3. If there are problems in the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear, it is mixed hearing loss.
As an auxiliary hearing device, the main function of hearing aids is to amplify sound. For users with conductive hearing loss, the lesions of the outer ear and middle ear cause the sound entering the inner ear to become smaller. After wearing hearing aids, this part of the smaller sound is amplified and enters the inner ear again, which will give a good listening effect.
Mixed hearing loss Secondly, the wearing effect of users with sensorineural hearing loss is relatively worse, because their hearing lesions are located behind the complex inner ear and auditory nerve. No matter how the sound is amplified, it needs to be received and transmitted by the inner ear. If the inner ear is diseased, the sound information cannot be fully received, and the phenomenon of hearing but not hearing clearly will occur.
In addition to the type of hearing loss, the duration of each person's hearing loss and the time of intervention will also affect the effect of hearing aid wearing. For example:
1. If you find that your hearing is declining, you will start to intervene and treat it in time, and the hearing aid will have a better listening effect.
2. If the user has hearing impairment or even prelingual deafness in the early stage, and starts wearing hearing aids after a long time, there will be resistance and poor hearing. However, you can't be anxious about this kind of situation. You need enough patience to carry out hearing rehabilitation training. As the brain continues to receive sound, the effect of hearing aids will also appear.
Therefore, even if it is the same hearing aid, different hearing loss types, hearing loss duration, and whether timely intervention will affect the wearing effect of hearing aids.
