How To Wear BTE Etimbre+ Hearing Aid:

A. Intalling Battery

1. Check whether the battery type is correct or not (Battery size:312A).
2. Remove the tag on the battery and keep ir in the air at least 1 minute.
3. Open the battery door gently.
4. Insert the battery to ensure the (+) side is at the same side with the "+" printed at the side edge of the battery door.
5. Gently close the battery door.

Stem cell treatment restores hearing in gerbils

A novel treatment using human embryonic stem cells has successfully restored some hearing to previously deaf gerbils, according to a study published this week in the journal Nature.

Hearing loss is generally caused by the interruption of two different types of cells: The loss of hair cells in the ear, which transform vibrations into electrical signals, and loss of the auditory nerve, which transmits the signals detected by the hair cells to the brainstem. While cochlear implants have proven effective in restoring hearing in cases of hair cell damage, no such treatment has existed for the roughly 10% cases in which the auditory nerve itself is damaged.

The new strategy, designed by Marcelo Rivolta and his team at the University of Sheffield, uses techniques the group has recently developed to coax human embryonic stem cells to differentiate into what are called "otic progenitor cells" -- cells that have the possibility to develop further into either hair cells or auditory nerve cells. The progenitor cells are then transplanted into the ears of gerbils with damaged auditory nerves, and allowed to differentiate further. Gerbils were used in the experiment because they hear a similar range of sounds as humans do.

At that point, the researchers held their breath, hoping that the cells would integrate themselves with the existing infrastructure and take their place in the chain of sensory signaling between the hair cells and the brainstem. In nearly all cases, the scientists could clearly see under the microscope that the new cells had targeted the right spots, reconnecting the hair cells to the brainstem.

But the ultimate test is hearing itself. To test this, the researchers used a standard approach called auditory-evoked responses, which are detected in the brainstem and provide a clear verdict of whether or not sound is being successfully transmitted to the brain.

Control animals with their auditory nerves knocked out did not recover during the experiment -- in order for a sound to register an auditory-evoked response in the brainstem, the control animals basically had to be at a rock concert, requiring a 76-decibel sound. But in the treated animals, that number dropped to 50 decibels on average, and in some animals approached the levels of animals whose hearing was never damaged at all. The strength of the effect was akin to suddenly being able to hear someone talking while previously not being able to hear them yell.

The researchers hope that their method will spark a new interest in using stem cells to treat hearing loss in people, though much work needs to be done before that is a real possibility. Hurdles include developing a surgical technique to access the appropriate part of the ear in people, and ensuring that the treatment sticks over long periods of time.

Nevertheless, the scientists are optimistic that the approach can be directly translated to humans with hearing loss, finally allowing people who cannot benefit from a cochlear implant to hear again.


New Treatment For Tinnitus In The Making

An article published in this weeksLancet provides a multidisciplinary approach to treating tinnitus. The specialised care program appears to be affective for both mild and severe tinitius and researchers hope their strategies will be implemented widely and be of great help to suffers.

The Canadian folk rock singer Neil Young famously suffered from tinnitus and had to stop recording for some years, but the problem is very common and said to affect nearly a quarter of all people during their lives. We have all been to nightclubs or concerts and woken up the next day with that irritating dull or high pitched ring in our ears, but imagine if it just didn´t go away day after day. It´s has the makings of some prison torture.

Researchers combined cognitive behavior therapy with sound-based tinnitus retraining therapy and produced results that better current treatments. Cima and Johan Vlaeyen from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, who led the research explain: 

"The results are highly relevant for clinical practice because best practice for tinnitus has not been defined, and current treatment strategies are fragmented and costly."

For their investigation, researchers recruited nearly 500 adults with tinnitus; half were randomly assigned to stepped specialized care and the other half to usual care stratified by tinnitus severity and hearing ability in blocks of four. Validated questionnaires were used to measure health-related quality of life, tinnitus severity, and tinnitus impairment. 

The program ran for 12 months and patients in the specialized care group reported improved quality of life (effect size 0·24***) and decreased tinnitus severity (0·43) and impairment (0·45) compared with those receiving standard treatment.

The authors conclude that:

"We showed the effectiveness of specialized care compared with usual care not only after the first 3 months of first-step treatment, but also after the more intensive second-step treatment approach ended and 4 months of no treatment ... Our findings could lead to consensus in policy about best practice in treatment of tinnitus, standard choices in referral trajectories, and the implementation of standardized tinnitus assessment and thereby more easily comparable outcomes".

Scientists not involved with the work, made positive comments but noted that the stepped care approach was only over a relatively short duration.

New Strategy Discovered To Prevent Hearing Loss

If you're concerned about losing your hearing because of noise exposure (earbud deafness syndrome), a new discovery published online in the FASEB Journaloffers some hope. That's because scientists from Germany and Canada show that the protein, AMPK, which protects cells during a lack of energy, also activates a channel protein in the cell membrane that allows potassium to leave the cell. This activity is important because this mechanism helps protect sensory cells in the inner ear from permanent damage following acoustic noise exposure. This information could lead to new strategies and therapies to prevent and treat trauma resulting from extreme noise, especially in people with AMPK gene variants that may make them more vulnerable to hearing loss.

"Future research on the basis of the present study may lead to the development of novel strategies preventing noise-induced hearing loss or accelerating recovery from acoustic trauma," said Florian Lang, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Physiology at the University of Tübingen, in Tübingen, Germany.

To make this discovery, Lang and colleagues compared two groups of mice. The first group was normal and the second lacked the AMPK protein. Hearing of the mice was tested by measuring sound-induced brain activity. All mice were exposed to well-defined noise causing an acoustic trauma and leading to hearing impairment. Prior to noise exposure, the hearing ability was similar in normal mice and mice lacking AMPK. After exposure, the hearing of the normal mice mostly recovered after two weeks, but the recovery of hearing in AMPK-deficient mice remained significantly impaired.

"When it comes to preventing hearing loss, keeping the volume down is still the best strategy, and this discovery doesn't prevent loud music from beating on our ear drums," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "This discovery does help explain why some people seem more likely to lose their hearing than others. At the same time, it also provides a target for new preventive strategies - and perhaps even a treatment - for earbud deafness syndrome."

The squelch region within each channel implements a low level noise reduction scheme for listener comfort. This scheme operates in quiet listening environments (programmable threshold) to reduce the gain at very low levels.

Adaptive Feedback Cancellation (AFC)

Based on a phase cancellation method, Jora’s Adaptive Feedback Reduction algorithm provides 17dB added stable gain to enable user comfort and open fitting. It features rapid adjustment for dynamic feedback situations and resistance to tonal inputs.

Adaptive Noise Reduction (ANR)

The noise reduction algorithm is built upon a high resolution 64−band filter bank enabling precise removal of noise. The algorithm monitors the signal and noise activities in these bands, and imposes an accurately calculated attenuation gain independently in each of the 64 bands. The Noise Reduction algorithm efficiently removes a wide variety of types of noise, while retaining natural speech quality and level. The level of noise reduction is configurable to 3, 6, 9 and 12 dB of reduction.

FrontWave Directional Microphone

The FrontWave directional system utilizes a pair of microphones to

create a fully customizable static polar pattern, that is hyper−cardiod, which is operated by delaying the rear−microphone signal and subtracting it from the front microphone signal. It focuses the front sound source that can guarantee the speech definition in noisy environment
