The relationship between hearing loss and cognitive decline

2022-01-07

Age related hearing loss, medically known as age-related hearing loss, once considered a relatively harmless consequence of various factors caused by age, is now gradually confirmed to be related to a variety of health conditions, including cognitive decline, depression and increased risk of falls.

The world hearing report released by the WHO (World Health Organization) in March this year pointed out that in the next 30 years, the number of global hearing loss may increase by 1.5 times; In other words, by 2050, one in four people in the world will suffer from hearing impairment to varying degrees.

With age, the connections between brain cells will be destroyed, or some cells will be lost - a process called "brain atrophy" or often called "cognitive decline".

Hearing loss and cognitive decline in the elderly

Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States has pointed out that the risk of dementia of hearing impaired people is five times higher than that of ordinary people. The main reason is poor communication caused by hearing impairment. After losing contact and interaction with the outside world over time, it accelerates the atrophy of cerebral cortex and greatly increases the risk of depression and dementia.

The report of the famous medical journal (the lancet) in 2017 also pointed out that among the nine risk factors of dementia, the first one is hearing impairment between the ages of 45 and 65, accounting for 9%, which is higher than 5% of smoking and 4% of depression. A new study by Columbia University in New York in 2020 also pointed out that although there is a lot of evidence that this is not a benign disease, only about 3% of adults with mild hearing loss still wear hearing aids. Professor Golub, an expert, pointed out that "the risk of treating hearing loss is very low, but the potential benefit is very high". What is the difference between official account books, public articles and medical experts' advice on children with mild hearing loss? If it's good for our children, why not for adults? We really need to see hearing loss as a bigger problem for adults and need early treatment.

Therefore, I also call on you to maintain adult hearing screening every six months to one year as far as possible after you are over 45 years old. Especially when you find yourself unable to hear clearly and prone to hearing fatigue, you need to find a hearing expert for examination and consultation in time. If there is hearing loss, it is also recommended to intervene as soon as possible.
